Do you have an AirBnB? Are you complaint and declaring your income?

If not, then you need to call me because the ATO are cracking down on those that have AirBnB’s and are not declaring their incomes.

One thing to note..DON’T TRY TO HIDE YOUR AIRBNB INCOME

The ATO can track your income and if your not earning a lot of money from your AirBnB it doesn’t matter, you need to keep your records. The ATO are cracking down on people who under-claim their rental income and this will lead you to pay back taxes, you will also incur new fines, penalties and even interest charges.

It’s not worth hiding your income.

So in a nutshell, if you aim to host a room or rent your property then you must know the tax implications of becoming an AirBnB host. You cannot under-claim your AirBnB income and you need to make sure you keep every single expense receipt.

Now if this sounds all too hard…then give me a call and I will sort your paperwork and make sure you claim all of your expenses so you can get the most out of those AirBnB tax deductions.

ATO eyes off over 300 businesses on South Coast of NSW…mmm..maybe they should have contacted me first.

https://www.accountantsdaily.com.au/tax-compliance/13703-ato-eyes-300-businesses-on-nsw-south-coast

This story just shows that the ATO is cracking down on many businesses and over 300 businesses on the South Coast of NSW have been found to be a higher than average number of overdue tax returns and business activity statements.
This just shows that you must keep up to date with your paperwork.

This is what my niche is, I help many businesses catch up and I do heaps of rescue work for clients. Those that are behind for the last few years is my specialty.

So don’t be like these businesses on the South Coast, give me a call and keep the ATO off your back.

Recent news about Woolworths under-paying staff

Now you must be living under a rock if you haven’t heard about Woolworths who have underpaid their staff and this made me think about writing this blog.

If they had of used a registered BAS Agent to prepare payroll and not an employee with no payroll training or have used an unregistered agent, then this problem would not have occurred.

This is a huge issue for Woolworths not only their reputation but financially to their shareholders, even their profit line because these payments will need to be backdated to all staff who have been underpaid.

So I wonder who’s head or heads are going to roll now with this problematic issue that will cost Woolworths…in a big way, not only financially but damaging to their brand.

What is stopping you from outsourcing to a Bookkeeper?

What is the main reason that clients hesitate in outsourcing? I think the main reason is they feel they may lose control. This happens to every business owner, it’s like the first time you allow your child to go to a play date and stay overnight at someone else’s place, that feeling of losing control not knowing what is happening with my child, are they ok? Are they safe?

It all comes down to trust.

The same applies to many business owners, small or large, it’s that feeling of losing control and having someone else take care of their bookkeeping.

I ask clients everyday what is the main reason and they say, ‘Oh I’m nervous to outsource, this is my business, I don’t want anyone to do this for me as I’ve been doing it for years, but it’s just taking up so much of my valued time.’

But wouldn’t it be better to outsource to free up your time?

Wouldn’t it make sense to outsource to a Bookkeeper that has the knowledge and expertise in this area?

Many times when I first start with a client, there has been a mistake made by them, no fault of their own, because they simply didn’t know, because they don’t have the experience or skillset in this area.

People think Bookkeeping is easy, it’s isn’t. I have spent over 20 years in this industry; I do regular training to keep up to date with all the changes? I love what I do and I have to keep abreast of all the regulations.

How many business owners could say they do training in bookkeeping, or read all the changes that are frequently happening…none…

So why be afraid to outsource?

If this is you, I offer a free complimentary 15 minute chat with you to discuss your concerns and believe me, once you outsource to me, you won’t ever go back to doing your bookkeeping yourself.

Call me to discuss your needs today.

ATO Toughens stance

Not sure if you are aware but the ATO is toughening their stance, as employers are increasingly being subjected to a rolling series of audits by the ATO.

It means if a business is behind on their SG obligations, the Tax Office is now taking a tougher stance on non-compliance.

In simple terms it means that with the ATO audits, employers are to check whether they had SG obligations. If for example an employer has been subjected to an audit in the finalisation letter there has been a requirement for them to provide evidence that they have also met their obligations for the last quarter.

It can be a little complicated but a business may have a years’ worth audited say for 2018 for example and if they haven’t complied with the obligations for the December quarter then the ATO will open up the file and audit their obligations from July 2018 through to December 2018. It means that an employer who is continuously not meeting their obligations when it comes to this, the ATO have a right to open up the file and be subjected to a continuous or rolling series of ATO audits. This would be a hard pill for any business owner to swallow.

So if you feel that this might be something of concern for you, please give me a call on
0429 363 047 to chat further so I can help you keep compliant.

Single Touch Payroll

What is Single touch payroll I hear you say?

Basically it means you‘ll be required to report salaries and wages, PAYG withholdings, and superannuation. Every time you pay your employees even if you are the only employee of your business (company director) you will still need to report when you pay your own wages.

More jobs to do I hear you say..more valuable time that I will lose…

So why not outsource this task to a Bookkeeper?

Outsource your payroll, so you can focus on your core business.

By outsourcing you will save time, save money…and save a lot of headaches along the way too!

Much cheaper to outsource then to perform this task yourself. If you currently don’t have the bookkeeping software and you are a small business and have been doing all your bookkeeping including your payroll in Excel, then instead of investing more money in purchasing payroll software, then Maree has a great deal at the moment to be able to provide you with a cloud based software solution at a hugely discounted price.

The introduction of Single Touch Payroll (STP) and other legislative changes planned for the future require significant changes to the way your report payroll. These changes to systems and processes are not only costly but time-consuming.

Not being complaint leaves your business exposed and subject to heavy penalties. Single Touch Payroll (STP) is no different. It adds another layer of complexity to your business.

Having an outsourced payroll provider gives you peace of mind. Your payroll process and compliance obligations are streamlined and taken care of by a professional.

Contact Maree today to outsource your single touch payroll.

Some common problems and issues I encounter when checking clients documentation

Over the years I have seen everything.

Some of the most common problems, mistakes and issues I have found when checking    clients work when it comes to bookkeeping are :

1. Super: Super payments that have been entered into the superannuation expense account instead of the liability account, this effectively means claiming it twice, which then will cause problems when you do your Profit and Loss Statements.

  1. Loan Repayments: Again clients are entering this into their expense account and not their liability account with GST. There is no GST on loan repayments. Also loan repayments are not tax deductible, you can only claim the interest and depreciation.

If this might sound like you, please give me a call and let me go through your documentation so I can pick up any issues or problems now!

When to hire a bookkeeper

Here are our top 5 reasons why you should hire a bookkeeper.

  1. Your business is growing at a rapid rate and what once was a job you were able to do, you don’t have the time anymore to sit and go through statements.

  1. The time you are spending doing your own bookkeeping is actually costing you time as well as money, where you could be working on growing your business even more. Also this only increases your workload and the amount of hours per week spent at work each week.
  2. Treat the time you spend on bookkeeping as an actual expense in cash, outsource it to save $$$.
  3. You have found an error, but not sure how to correct it, hence why outsourcing to a Bookkeeper who knows MYOB and other bookkeeping packages can fix this quickly for you.
  4. Do you know all the new tax rules this year, if you don’t another reason to outsource to a bookkeeper.

So if you are nodding your head and agree to the above reasons, then it may be time to give Maree a call from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping on 0429 363 047.

Why does my bookkeeper need to sight my bank statements?

There are a number of reasons why we as bookkeepers need to sight bank statements and the main goal by doing this is to make sure there is a recorded balance of your business and the recorded balance of the bank match up.

Here is why we need to sight your bank statements and reconcile your bank feeds.

1. Validation – Data entry

Checking your bank statement we can pick up any irregularities, such as duplicating entries, entering wrong amounts and data errors.

  1. Accuracy of Financial Statements

This is such an important one, where we check that your financial statements match those of the bank. Sometimes, on rare occasions, the bank may make a mistake, so normally it is the business owner that has, so checking that these match-up is paramount.

  1. Tax Reporting

This may sound simple, but making sure your reconciling your bank statement correctly so we can generate a correct tax return for you.

This just enables us as your bookkeeper to monitor and spot any irregularities between your financial statement and that of the bank. It is also a precaution to control theft as it prevents employees or others from stealing from your company.

So to give you a prime example, we had a client once who had not done a bank reconciliation for 5 years. The client’s accountant had been doing the tax returns, but not checking it either. There were duplicated sales, missing expenses, everything you could think of. Therefore the client’s tax returns for the last 5 years were incorrect. So in this case, we had to go back and go through everything over the last 5 years.

If this sounds familiar to you, then save yourself, time and stress and call Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping on 0429 363 047 and outsource your bookkeeping today.

I don’t just punch the numbers, I read between the lines to provide you advice to help you achieve your goals, which will save you time; save you from stress and help you grow your business and ultimately make more money.

I asked him why he would say that, he explained that he has no money in the bank at all. I went looking through his Profit & Loss Statements and in fact the business was very profitable. I explained to him and asked him if I could research further and looking into his transactions and see why he doesn’t have any cash flow. Well what I discovered was he was drawing more from his personal fund then from the business account then he actually needed, which left him with not enough funds to pay the bills for the business.

How the Bookkeeping industry has changed over the last 20 years

To be honest I cannot believe I have worked within the bookkeeping industry for over 20 years and have definitely seen many changes in that time.

What was once the traditional bookkeeper role I remember clients giving me a stack of receipts and paper bank statements, even to this day I do still receive paperwork in shoeboxes, but at that time all the information was keyed into the computer, including all their financial information.

This was quite time consuming in my early days of bookkeeping and there was no such thing as Facebook, SMS, PM etc. The old phone and email or fax machine was my forms of communication.

Compared to nowadays, us bookkeepers have had to adapt to different software, we now all have websites, we are probably a lot quicker and efficient having the likes of fantastic software packages ie Xero, MYOB and Quickbooks and now that everything is cloud based has made our lives so much easier. In fact with technology it has increased my client database to what it was over 20 years ago. I am able to take on more clients as the time it takes is much quicker then the old way of data entry and account reconciling.

The best thing now with technology in 2018 is the efficiency and being able to provide real-time information now to my clients is fantastic so I can provide up to date service there and then on the spot.

Any good bookkeeper will have solid accounting knowledge combined with quick data entry skills and also be knowledgeable about accounting software too.

So if you would like to know more information, please contact Maree Punzet from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping on 0429 363 047 or visit her website www.mareesmobilebookkeeping.com.au

Did you know UBER drivers need to be GST registered?

Now we all know Australia has been taken over by UBER drivers, UBER driving is on the increase. So I wonder if those drivers out there, realise they need to be GST registered.

In this article, the ATO is reminding people involved in ride-sourcing to make sure they understand their tax obligations. httpss://www.ato.gov.au/Media-centre/Media-releases/Don-t-take-your-tax-return-for-a-ride/

So for any UBER driver or ride-sourcing enterprise, the ATO is reminding those that they must be registered for GST regardless of their turnover and pay GST on the full fare.

If you are a ride-sourcing service and do not have a ABN (Australian Business Number) and GST registration, then this needs to be your first priority. Remember you can also claim tax deductions and GST credits within your business. For example your car, fuel, servicing, smartphone and data usage is all claimable tax deductions.

Even if you purchase something that is used for both business and private, you can claim the part that relates to your business use.

Most UBER or ride sourcing services they like to be called generally are sole traders, unless they have other formal arrangements for their business structure.

If you would like to find out more about this and need assistance in this area, do not hesitate to contact Maree Punzet from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping on 0429 363 047 or visit Maree’s website www.mareesmobilebookkeeping.com.au

She has restructured and remodelled her business to incorporate financial and secretarial tasks as well. So I suppose if you look at it, Maree is expanding her tasks to those who need help in the virtual world.

That doesn’t mean Maree will stop doing bookkeeping, but she felt the need to expand her skillset to other areas as businesses need help with expense reports, researching, data entry, drafting letters, updating policy and procedure manuals for example.

With the way the virtual world is changing, many small businesses are outsourcing many more tasks then they ever used too.

The guidelines of paying GST as a small business owner

When it comes to paying GST as a small business owner there are a few facts you need to know.

This is taken from the ATO website as of 4 April 2017.

Link : httpss://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/How-GST-works/

What you need to do for GST

If you run a business or other enterprise and have a GST turnover of $75,000 or more ($150,000 or more for non-profit organisations), or you provide taxi travel (including ride-sourcing) – you need to:

So as per the link above from the ATO website, you need to be earning more than $75,000 to actually register for GST and $150,000 or more for non-profit organisations. Many business owners are not actually sure how much they are earning or know how to lodge activity statements or claim GST credits in the price of their business purchases. It gets very complicated and for a small business owner who hasn’t had exposure to any of this before, it can really be quite daunting and overwhelming. That is why as a qualified Bookkeeper, my clients just hand it all over to me and say “Maree, can you fix this and work this all out and just let me know what I have to pay!”

That’s a common theme or comment I receive. So when it comes to GST, there is so much more you need to know. Even if your business hasn’t reached that level yet, but your getting close to earning $75,000 or more, it might be time to contact me to assist you so the transition is not stressful.

Don’t get in the habit of leaving things too late, even if you are a new business and haven’t even looked at GST, it’s better to start early and have your paperwork in order.

Money, Money, Money

Now that is a great bold heading isn’t it? Gosh money, money, money, wasn’t that a song written and sung by ABBA?

Well I’m not going down the musical path in this article, but I do want to talk about money. Why is it so important to small businesses? Money is ‘gold’ when it comes to small business, all businesses large or small need cash-flow. Money helps pay the bills, helps expand a business, pay’s the employees and also helps to pay for marketing and websites and a new CRM program or equipment and material for example. It is one thing we all need. Though when it comes to business, it is one thing we seem to not have a lot of, or we are always chasing clients for payment.

This is where a ‘bookkeeper’ comes in handy, making sure your income and expenses are entered into correctly, that you are aware of your profits and losses, how much tax you have to pay. Your incoming and outgoing expenses and just the general efficient running of the ‘money’ side of your business.

So why don’t all businesses utilise a ‘bookkeeper’? It is the most important job to do for any business owner. If you are out there making sales, getting work in only to not receive dividends of your hard work, then basically you are working for ‘fresh air’. No one wants to work for ‘fresh air’ we work for ‘money’. I hear you saying, but we do it for the love of it, deep down we all know we still do it for the money. That’s what business is about, it is difficult at times and some months are better than others, but don’t let this part of your business fail, because if it does, there won’t be a business.

Review your business model, look at utilising a bookkeeper and know that you will have ‘money’ always in your account, not ‘fresh air’. Contact Maree Punzet from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping, I help so many clients around Australia, let me help you too!!!
