Why do I need a Bookkeeper?

Why do I need a Bookkeeper, well a bookkeeper is like your nerdy paperwork best friend. I can’t put it any better than that, maybe not nerdy, but we are the ones that know all the ins/outs of how the Bookkeeping world works. We have been in business for over 20 years and offer a simple fixed priced schedule to suit clients from small start-ups to large businesses. We are registered BAS agents and experts in MYOB, Quickbooks and Xero. We look after clients from Brisbane to Broome and everywhere in between. We have clients in Tassie and as far north as Darwin.

It doesn’t matter where you are located, we can assist you.

The most common mistake we notice is many clients will try to save money and do the bookkeeping themselves to save money. But in the end, we find many clients have actually entered wrong coding and wrong information into the system and these small errors become large errors when it comes time to reconcile.

It is just cheaper and easier to outsource your work to a bookkeeper, hand over the paperwork to your nerdy paperwork best friend and forget about it. Why deal with the headache. We love this stuff, that’s what we do day in/day out.

So next time you consider obtaining a bookkeeper, give us a call, contact Maree Punzet from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping on 0429 363 047.

EOFY – Tips

One of the main ones I see all the time is people not using a registered Tax Agent or Bookkeeper. Peter from Tax and Accounting services and myself have been working together for many years.

We are basically a one stop shop. So we provide both bookkeeping and tax and accounting advice in the one place. There is no need to go to other businesses as well work together for our clients. The beauty is many clients don’t have to ring around trying to find an Accountant or a separate bookkeeper.

We formed our business partnership many years ago and it has worked very well. Not only do we help each other with our client’s needs, but it has been great building a solid model for our businesses and our client database has expanded over the years.

We cover everything from data entry and reconciling to BAS Statements to Tax advice. It has become apparent the number of referrals we receive because of our fantastic partnership.

Bookkeeping’ Should be at the TOP of your list, not LAST……

When I do bookkeeping for many clients, it’s something most clients leave to the last minute or it’s the last thing on their to do list. It’s like “I’ll get around to it, next week, or someday.”

This is when a Bookkeeper like myself comes in handy. I receive many enquiries on a daily basis whereby a client has got so behind with their paperwork and they haven’t lodged a BAS statement and they start to panic.

This is what I enjoy the most, fixing and correcting and updating clients paperwork ie entering all their data of income and expenses, Quarterly BAS reconciliations and more. So if you think your in a mess with your paperwork or your feeling overwhelmed by it all, then give me a call. This is what I do, so you will never behind again.

How the Bookkeeping industry has changed over the last 20 years

To be honest I cannot believe I have worked within the bookkeeping industry for over 20 years and have definitely seen many changes in that time.

What was once the traditional bookkeeper role I remember clients giving me a stack of receipts and paper bank statements, even to this day I do still receive paperwork in shoeboxes, but at that time all the information was keyed into the computer, including all their financial information.

This was quite time consuming in my early days of bookkeeping and there was no such thing as Facebook, SMS, PM etc. The old phone and email or fax machine was my forms of communication.

Compared to nowadays, us bookkeepers have had to adapt to different software, we now all have websites, we are probably a lot quicker and efficient having the likes of fantastic software packages ie Xero, MYOB and Quickbooks and now that everything is cloud based has made our lives so much easier. In fact with technology it has increased my client database to what it was over 20 years ago. I am able to take on more clients as the time it takes is much quicker then the old way of data entry and account reconciling.

The best thing now with technology in 2018 is the efficiency and being able to provide real-time information now to my clients is fantastic so I can provide up to date service there and then on the spot.

Any good bookkeeper will have solid accounting knowledge combined with quick data entry skills and also be knowledgeable about accounting software too.

Did you know UBER drivers need to be GST registered?

Now we all know Australia has been taken over by UBER drivers, UBER driving is on the increase. So I wonder if those drivers out there, realise they need to be GST registered.

In this article, the ATO is reminding people involved in ride-sourcing to make sure they understand their tax obligations. httpss://www.ato.gov.au/Media-centre/Media-releases/Don-t-take-your-tax-return-for-a-ride/

So for any UBER driver or ride-sourcing enterprise, the ATO is reminding those that they must be registered for GST regardless of their turnover and pay GST on the full fare.

If you are a ride-sourcing service and do not have a ABN (Australian Business Number) and GST registration, then this needs to be your first priority. Remember you can also claim tax deductions and GST credits within your business. For example your car, fuel, servicing, smartphone and data usage is all claimable tax deductions.

Even if you purchase something that is used for both business and private, you can claim the part that relates to your business use.

Most UBER or ride sourcing services they like to be called generally are sole traders, unless they have other formal arrangements for their business structure.

If you would like to find out more about this and need assistance in this area, do not hesitate to contact Maree Punzet from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping on 0429 363 047 or visit Maree’s website www.mareesmobilebookkeeping.com.au

She has restructured and remodelled her business to incorporate financial and secretarial tasks as well. So I suppose if you look at it, Maree is expanding her tasks to those who need help in the virtual world.

That doesn’t mean Maree will stop doing bookkeeping, but she felt the need to expand her skillset to other areas as businesses need help with expense reports, researching, data entry, drafting letters, updating policy and procedure manuals for example.

With the way the virtual world is changing, many small businesses are outsourcing many more tasks then they ever used too.

The guidelines of paying GST as a small business owner

When it comes to paying GST as a small business owner there are a few facts you need to know.

This is taken from the ATO website as of 4 April 2017.

Link : httpss://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/How-GST-works/

What you need to do for GST

If you run a business or other enterprise and have a GST turnover of $75,000 or more ($150,000 or more for non-profit organisations), or you provide taxi travel (including ride-sourcing) – you need to:

So as per the link above from the ATO website, you need to be earning more than $75,000 to actually register for GST and $150,000 or more for non-profit organisations. Many business owners are not actually sure how much they are earning or know how to lodge activity statements or claim GST credits in the price of their business purchases. It gets very complicated and for a small business owner who hasn’t had exposure to any of this before, it can really be quite daunting and overwhelming. That is why as a qualified Bookkeeper, my clients just hand it all over to me and say “Maree, can you fix this and work this all out and just let me know what I have to pay!”

That’s a common theme or comment I receive. So when it comes to GST, there is so much more you need to know. Even if your business hasn’t reached that level yet, but your getting close to earning $75,000 or more, it might be time to contact me to assist you so the transition is not stressful.

Don’t get in the habit of leaving things too late, even if you are a new business and haven’t even looked at GST, it’s better to start early and have your paperwork in order.

Money, Money, Money

Now that is a great bold heading isn’t it? Gosh money, money, money, wasn’t that a song written and sung by ABBA?

Well I’m not going down the musical path in this article, but I do want to talk about money. Why is it so important to small businesses? Money is ‘gold’ when it comes to small business, all businesses large or small need cash-flow. Money helps pay the bills, helps expand a business, pay’s the employees and also helps to pay for marketing and websites and a new CRM program or equipment and material for example. It is one thing we all need. Though when it comes to business, it is one thing we seem to not have a lot of, or we are always chasing clients for payment.

This is where a ‘bookkeeper’ comes in handy, making sure your income and expenses are entered into correctly, that you are aware of your profits and losses, how much tax you have to pay. Your incoming and outgoing expenses and just the general efficient running of the ‘money’ side of your business.

So why don’t all businesses utilise a ‘bookkeeper’? It is the most important job to do for any business owner. If you are out there making sales, getting work in only to not receive dividends of your hard work, then basically you are working for ‘fresh air’. No one wants to work for ‘fresh air’ we work for ‘money’. I hear you saying, but we do it for the love of it, deep down we all know we still do it for the money. That’s what business is about, it is difficult at times and some months are better than others, but don’t let this part of your business fail, because if it does, there won’t be a business.

Review your business model, look at utilising a bookkeeper and know that you will have ‘money’ always in your account, not ‘fresh air’. Contact Maree Punzet from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping, I help so many clients around Australia, let me help you too!!!

Are you aware and are you at risk of bankruptcy as a small to medium business owner?

The ATO has issued that many small to medium sized businesses in 2016/2017 are at risk of bankruptcy which will destroy thousands of small to medium sized businesses within Australia.

Unless the Turnbull Government reverses this damaging arrangement, business owners have until June 30th, 2017 to get their affairs in order. This in turn will require small business owners to complete back-end paperwork rather than concentrating on running their businesses.

“It has been quoted that from 1st July 2017, the Australian Tax Office has been granted access by the Federal Government, by an amendment to the Privacy Act, to access Credit Reporting Bureaus client files, to list credit infringements where an alleged tax debt amount is >$10,000 and older than 90 days. This applies to companies and individuals that carry an Australian Business Number (ABN)”

Bookkeeping’ is like a box of chocolates

So true, like the story of Forrest Gump. ‘Bookkeeping’ is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get.

Each client that I work for, come from different areas, backgrounds and industries. When I receive their paperwork, believe me, it is like a box of chocolates. Hand written notes on post-it’s, shoeboxes full of receipts, emails explaining different expenses.

It can be quite humourous as many clients absolutely detest this part of their business, that is why they outsource to me. So let me get your ‘chocolates’ in order and fix your bookkeeping today.

The “ATO” are targeting “cash” type businesses, are you one of them?

The ATO is targeting “cash” type businesses for example if you own a Cafe, Restaurant, Hairdressers or Beauty Salons. Two of my own clients are now being audited by the ATO. So this is why I assist businesses with their books and make sure they are up to date before the ATO come knocking.

This excerpt was taken from the Sydney Morning Herald  https://www.smh.com.au/business/the-economy/ato-cracking-down-on-cash-economy-20140825-1082c9.html “The Tax Office is cracking down on the black economy, targeting businesses that are not declaring cash revenues, from restaurants through to home cleaners, in a bid to bring billions of dollars back into the tax net.” “Business owners do not understand the risks of handling cash, including robbery, fraud and . . . the fact that until you cash the money at the bank it has no value.” Mr Hardy said “there’s nothing wrong in operating in cash . . . as long as it declares the income.”

That’s right, as a small business owner, there are no problems when it comes to operating in cash, but as long as you declare the income and that’s where some business owners get stuck!!

So if you know you are behind in your books, let me assist you today.
