The Prime Minister has removed the $10,000 liquid asset test from the COVID-19 Disaster payment

Did you know before Thursday last week, eligible applicants for the COVID disaster payment were subjected to a liquid asset means test to prove they had less than $10,000 worth of liquid assets, like shares & savings?

Now the Prime Minister said the liquid asset test applied to payments of $325 or $500 would be lifted for those who apply for the payment as a result of having missed work in NSW, and residents of other states, should any lockdowns persist.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has asked the state for the Job Keeper to be reinstated on Thursday, ongoing discussions and options are on the table.

‘In addition to the asset test changes, the Morrison government suspended mutual obligation requirements for Greater Sydney residents receiving welfare payments, like JobSeeker’
‘The announcements from both Premier Berejiklian and Prime Minister Morrison come less than 24 hours after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg knocked back the state’s request for a return of JobKeeper’
It will be interesting to see what happens.

Do you know about the changes to unpaid parental leave entitlements?

The Fair Work Act was amended on the 26th November 2020, to include new unpaid parental leave entitlements for parents, who experience the traumatic events during or ahead of their unpaid parental leave.

In other words, this includes premature birth, stillbirth, death of a child.

It’s something we don’t want to talk about or even think about, but these changes will enable all eligible parents to access up to 30 days of their unpaid parental leave. This only applies to a child born or whose placement happens on or after 27th November 2020.

It is hard to fathom what parents go through during these traumatic events.

Even though I talk about business, bookkeeping and PAYG etc, these events do happen to so many people, which is so unfortunate and as a bookkeeper, I keep abreast with these changes which may affect you or your employee.

Changes to Casual Employment

If you haven’t heard already, on Friday 26th March 2021, the Fair Work Act 2009 was amended to change workplace rights and obligations for casual employees. These changes came into effect on Saturday 27th March 2021.

In a nutshell, what has changed is the Amendment Act has introduced the following
-The Casual Employment Information Statement
-The Definition of Casual Employment
-Pathway for casual employees to move to full time or part-time (permanent) employment.

In regards to the Casual Employment Information Statement, now Employers will have to give every new casual employee a Casual Employment Information Statement before, or as soon as possible after they start their new job.

The definition of a Casual Employee is the Fair Work Act has been amended to include a new definition. That a person is a casual employee if they accept a job offer from an employer knowing that there is no firm advance commitment to ongoing work with an agreed pattern of work. They will remain a casual employee until they either, become a permanent employee through: casual conversion, or are offered and accept the offer for full time or part time employment, or stop being employed by the employer.

The existing casual employees, which are those casuals who were employed immediately before 27th March 2021 and whose initial employment offer meets the definition, will then continue to be casual employees under the FW Act.

If this sounds all too confusing, give me a call and let me step you through it and remember that there is a new avenue to resolve some disputes about casual conversion through the Federal Circuit Court.

Businesses given a deadline to acquire a Director ID

Recent news that Business Directors now have a set deadline to obtain a director identification number under the federal governments digital business plan.

It’s providing directors appointed under the Corporations Act 2001 that they have up until the 30th November 2022 to obtain a Director Identification Number (Director ID).

It will apply for both existing Directors who were appointed prior to the start of the Director ID regime as well as Directors appointed during the testing phase. The Government released these details as part of the 2020 budget Digital Business Plan.

The director ID will help prevent the appointment of fictitious directors, which unfortunately some businesses have done. This is under the MBR program which was announced as part of last years.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime.

The ATO is permanently launching the small business dispute resolution service

If you didn’t already know, but the ATO has announced its small business independent review service. It will be a permanent service, following a successful pilot stretching several years.
This service will be available for eligible small businesses with an annual turnover of less than $10million. This service will help businesses with disputes about income tax, GST, excise, luxury car tax, wine equalisation tax and fuel tax credits.

You might be asking, what about disputes about employer obligations for instance superannuation; & fringe benefits tax are not eligible for the independent review service. This independent review service is available to eligible small businesses in addition to other dispute options, ie lodging an objection, in-house facilitation.
The pilot program started in 2018, over 1200 or more small businesses have been offered the service. More than 180 small businesses have taken up the ATO’s offer. Since the pilot program started, those that participated found the process to be fair and independent, hence why it’s now been implemented permanently.

Personally, I think it’s a great initiative and extremely helpful to small business.

ATO is flipping the switch on debt recovery

As you may or may not know, taxpayers in Australia are falling behind on tax debts and lodgement obligations.

With JobKeeper coming to an end on the 28th March 2021, the program is officially over. The Tax Office has confirmed that it will now resume pursuing and enforcing debt recovery.

It has come to this stage because the ATO had been sending out letters to taxpayers in February to warn them of potential action, but many taxpayers have failed to make good on their obligations.

The debt is growing and many bookkeepers and accountants have predicted that the ATO would turn to stronger enforcement, once the JobKeeper program finished.
Even though Australia has had to ensure, bushfires, floods, COVID-19, has had a significant impact on taxpayers. What is required is for people now to get their paperwork in order and that is where I come in.

The last thing you want is the ATO on your case, we as bookkeepers and accountants have been urged from the ATO office to ensure our clients continue to lodge even if they are unable to pay, with tailored payment plans as this is still available to them.

Don’t ignore the letters from the ATO, if you are worried, please give me a call.

Are Bookkeepers in demand in 2021?

The answer is YES

Since COVID started, it was already busy, but now that we are coming out of COVID, more people have reconsidered how they spend $$$ on their business and what is really great to see is so many more people are coming to the conclusion that it is way smarter and cheaper to outsource their bookkeeping.

It makes good economic sense.

More so now, then ever before.

With the Government making changes to requirements for businesses, business owners are confused as to what is on offer for them, what they need to do and when different things are due.
So yes, the answer is a resounding yes, we are very much in demand.

If you need assistance, you’re in the right place, just give me a call, email, pm, whatever and I can help you anytime, any day.

The COVID Rebound

Can you believe it’s been 12 months already of the 1st case of COVID. In Australia we faired pretty well compared to the rest of the world.

We are definitely in rebound mode, for many business owners, it’s survival. Some have been able to grow leaps and bounds, pivot, while others have relied on the Jobkeeper payments and still could close.

But the outlook looks to be that Australia business is on the rebound.

There has been new consumer confidence in the market, people seem to have more money, they are spending on homes, cars, holidays locally and interstate because they can’t spend that money on overseas holidays.

So there are a couple of things to think about with this rebound which is:

1.Cashflow
Look at your business and review exactly how much it needs to survive and what timeline.

2. Documentation
Document everything, if you are not already, look at streamlining your processes. Start reviewing your costs in pre-crisis revenue and margin to post crisis.

3. Inventory
As Australia is starting to reopen borders, early movers building inventory soon may benefit from pre-surge prices.

4. Prepare to Hire
I know that sounds crazy, but can you afford to add staff now or not. Do you have a HR person to help, look at identifying job descriptions, start dates.

5. Work with the best Bookkeeper
Now this one is a given, you need to talk to me. A good bookkeeper will save you a lot of $$$.

So remember, we are coming out of this pandemic and it’s exciting to see Australia rebound and show the rest of the world, how tough and resilient we truly are.

Did you know the Government is planning to reveal a $1.2 billion extension of the Apprenticeship wage subsidy?

I for one applaud this initiative from the Government. For any business or group training organisation, if an apprentice is engaged between 5th October 2020 through to 21st September 2021, they may be eligible for a subsidy of 50% of wages paid to a new or recommencing apprentice or trainee for a 12-month period from the date of commencement. The maximum of $7000 per quarter.

As a mother of two boys my eldest son only having left High School late 2020 after completing his HSC, this is a fantastic initiative for anyone or has just left school or even those looking to change careers.

We definitely need this due to COVID and the economic challenges that are to come in the future.
I hope that businesses will take up this initiative because we need a skilled workforce. It also shows that there is greater confidence for businesses who may have held back over the last 12 months.

I myself am thankful and having children of my own it provides me some security that they have a bright future ahead.

EOFY is approaching – are you ready?

Mmmm that question has made many people a little nervous this year.

I am not sure why, I think with the turbulent year of COVID and businesses being in lockdown and reopening, many people haven’t kept an eye on the expenses or they have been so busy because COVID brought more work into their business, they are way behind in their books.

EOFY is an extremely important time of the year for any business. Not only that you must have everything up to date, but it’s a good time to reflect on the past 12 months and look at how your business faired.

Many people will be worried because COVID had an impact on many businesses, some failed and had to close or they had to stand down employees, other businesses had the oppositive effect and had to put on staff to cope with the increased amount of business.

Either way, EOFY is only a few months away and now more then ever is the time when you need to outsource your bookkeeping to a qualified bookkeeper. Someone that can take that pressure off you or even just to answer a question you may have.

Many regulations and changes are taking place and Jobkeeper will be finished at the end of March. Please don’t hesitate to give me a call now and let me get you organised and up to date for EOFY.

Have you lodged your TPAR or have your forgotten to lodge?

Did you know more than 60,000 businesses in Australia are yet to comply with their lodgement requirements under the Taxable Payments Reporting System (TPRS). The due date was last August 2020, so the ATO will be chasing those who haven’t lodged.

Are you one of those 60,000 businesses in Australia?

Did you know if you have yet lodged, that you may incur penalties from the ATO. This is when contractors who have don’t report or under-report their income, it’s dangerous to do this and you will be caught.

In fairness, some businesses do not realise they need to lodge a taxable payments annual report (TPAR), but may be required, depending on the percentage of payments received for courier services or deliveries.

Businesses for example ie Restaurants, Cafes, Pharmacies, Grocery Stores and retailers have started paying contractors to deliver their goods to customers, especially since COVID. These businesses previously may not have needed to lodge a TPAR, but if the total payments received for deliveries or courier services are 10% or more of the total annual business income, then they will need to lodge.

Do you fit in this criteria?

It is what the ATO describe as the Black Economy. This is costing the community as much as $50 billion dollars. Other areas that pay contractors are those that provide road freight, information technology, security, investigation or surveillance services. If you do fit in these areas then you need to lodge a TPAR with the ATO.

If you are confused and think maybe I need help, then give Maree a call direct on 0429 363 047 today.

Why the wife or partner shouldn’t do the Bookkeeping

The number of times when I call a business owner and the response is ‘oh the Mrs / partner does the Bookkeeping.’

That there is where the problem lies.

Firstly, not all Mrs or Partners are fully qualified Bookkeepers. Not all know what they are doing.

But because you’re in a relationship with this person, you don’t question what they are doing with your books, because of course you trust them.

Unintentionally the Mrs/Partner may be entering in the wrong information or not coding an expense correctly, not out of spite, but just because they are not experienced and because most couples don’t want to upset the other, they trust they are doing the right thing.

More often than I can count, is when a business owner calls me, because mistakes have been made and then it causes problems in the relationship, which it shouldn’t.

Hence why when it comes to bookkeeping, right from the beginning you should outsource to a bookkeeper. Someone that is impartial, but also makes your business a priority, because that is what I do. I treat your business financials as my own. If I’m helping businesses with PAYG or payroll, reconciliations, whatever it is, I do it as if it was my own business.

So instead of allowing your Mrs/Partner to do your bookkeeping, it is way better to outsource this area of your business and keep your loving relationship intact, otherwise you may be visiting a divorce lawyer instead.

The Jobmaker Plan

Have you seen the Jobmaker Plan the Government has put together to create jobs and help the recovery of the Economy?

If not, click the link here to read more https://budget.gov.au/2020-21/content/jobmaker.htm

What the Government has put forward is a $74 billion Jobmaker plan to support economic recovery and get Australians back to work and on their feet.

Some of the core elements they are putting together are:

–       Infrastructure, the Government has invested an additional $14 billion in new and accelerated infrastructure projects across Australia over the next 4 years

–       Jobmaker Hiring Credit – $4 billion providing businesses with an incentive to take on additional employees aged between 16 and 35.

–       Energy technologies – The Government is investing $1.9 billion in new energy technologies which will reduce emissions.

  • Reducing red tape for businesses – The Government is incorporating a insolvency system to keep businesses in business and make it easier for consumers and small businesses to obtain credit.
  • Digital Business Plan – The Government is accelerating digital transformation by increasing productivity and job growth; therefore, their goal is a leading digital economy by 2030.

It will be interesting to see over the next 4 years how this Jobmaker plan will unfold and we hope that we all come out of this a stronger and economically sound country.

Are you part of the Construction Industry, here are some helpful bookkeeping tips for you.

How I love working for my clients in the construction industry.

The Construction industry have the unique experience of working with a range of employees, partners, outside contractors, businesses and individuals and all have various payment schemes.

Working within this industry, books can quickly become complex, hence why this industry in particular, should consider outsourcing to a Bookkeeper.

There are many different facets from reporting on incomings, outgoings, tax, super and benefits.

Construction accounting is very different is project driven. Construction workers are contractors who operate their own business around projects and these can be scattered on different sites and locations. Then you need to look at the different sites to consider the wage differences, equipment and transportation costs, the length of contracts can vary, orders and plans can change quickly and these changes need to be tracked diligently. You also need to look at the changes in the construction scope, design, site conditions, project schedule to make sure you don’t break the budget.

If you are struggling and work in this industry and losing track of your finances, then please give me a call. I have many years’ experience in this area.

The worst bookkeeping mistakes that most business owners don’t realise

There are a number of mistakes business owners don’t even realise they are doing and in my years of bookkeeping experience, I have seen so many.

  1. Not setting up your chart of accounts
If you are doing your bookkeeping yourself, try not to use what the bookkeeping software provides as it may not be relevant. It’s beneficial to build your own and also make sure your GST codes are correct.
  2. Setting up your Petty Cash account in Assets
If you have an office petty cash tin, it is not an asset. So, don’t setup an account for it.
  3. Not setting up payroll correctly
Oh, boy have I seen some doozies in my time. It is extremely important that payroll and employees have been setup correctly. Include the employees DOB, TF and ensure their penalty rates are correct and also don’t forget that your linked accounts are correct, which includes tax, superannuation etc.
  4. Reconciling incorrectly
This includes all bank and credit card reconciliation, BAS reconciliation and payment summaries and superannuation.
  5. Assets or liabilities as expenses
By now you should know the difference between the two, but many business owners don’t. I can definitely help you and explain the difference.

It sounds simple, but why would you do this yourself, when you can outsource this to me.

Do you know the differences of a Sole Trader and a Small Company

Business structure in Australia has a number of different structures from sole traders to companies, partnerships and trusts.

Definition of a Sole Trader

“A sole trader is an individual running a business. It is the simplest and cheapest business structure. If you operate your business as a sole trader, you are the only owner and you control and manage the business.” – ATO.

Definition of a Company

“A company business structure is a separate legal entity, unlike a sole trader or a partnership structure. This means the company has the same rights as a natural person and can incur debt, sue and be sued.” – Business.gov.au

Each one has different structures.

As a sole trader there a few costs and setup obligations, whereas if you have a company it is totally different.

Without going into great detail of both structures, it comes down to making sure you all your paperwork is in order, that you have good record keeping, and know what your responsibilities are if you are a Sole Trader or a Company.

If you would like to have a 20-minute free scope call to discuss your needs and talk about how you should structure your business, then please make an appointment with me or call 0429 363 047.

Bookkeeping for tradesmen and tradeswomen

This industry is as we know it in 2020, flat out for tradies, anyone that works on the tools, electricians, plumbers, carpenters,  tradies spend a lot of time mastering their trade and the last thing they want to do when they get home is bookkeeping.

Many might say, I have a wife or girlfriend that can do that for me.

Well, the amount of tradies paperwork I see the partner has been doing, is a complete mess. It isn’t always the best decision to let your loved one do your books.

You need to also remember the time you spend or your partner spends on bookkeeping, is either time you could be charging out or in some case time you should be recharging your batteries ready for the next work day and also if you are in a partnership or married, you won’t be heading to the courts to get divorced.

Keep your business separate and outsource today to a Bookkeeper today.

Keeping track of finances is a struggle, especially for cafes and restaurants

Do you fit that category?

Are you a business owner who owns a café or restaurant?

Those that work in this industry know how busy one gets with juggling staff, shifts, rosters, suppliers, cashflow, serving customers, taking inquiries, stock taking, cleaning, the list goes on.

I have many clients that work in this industry and you know why they outsource to me to do their Bookkeeping and BAS, because they don’t have the time.

Businesses in hospitality have the highest percentage of failure, due to poor record keeping, I bet you didn’t know that.

As a result, with little or no data, decisions are made on emotion, which is a bad thing when it comes to bookkeeping.

Statutory reporting for many cafes and restaurants can also be an issue with many supplier invoices being GST taxable, free or a combination.

Are you nodding your head in agreeance?

Once you have managed all your supplier invoices and then the rostering of employees, outsourcing to a Bookkeeping makes sense.

Nowadays since COVID, cafes and restaurants have had to come up with different ways to serve customers via delivery or for customers to pick up. Now that we are slowly coming out of the pandemic in different states, business owners are looking at better ways to serve their customers whilst maintaining social distance and following all hygiene precautions whilst still making sure food is served and delivered and ultimately the customer is happy.

It is a massive task for any business owner.

The ATO has issued a reminder to businesses who may be subject to penalties for missing October 2020 deadline to fulfil their Superannuation Guarantee Obligations

Don’t be one of those businesses that is subject to penalties.

By law, the ATO has advised and reminded businesses they cannot extend the due date to pay superannuation.

If you have already missed the 28th October deadline to pay your quarterly SG contributions, you will need to lodge a superannuation guarantee by the 28th November 2020 to avoid penalties, after this date you will incur the penalties and believe me you don’t want to miss the deadline.

‘The ATO noted the superannuation guarantee charge is different to the regular contributions businesses pay and is made up of SG shortfall amounts, interest on those amounts (currently 10 per cent) and an administration fee of $20 per employee per quarter’

If you need assistance now, then please give me a call on 0429 363 047.

Your paying for my years of experience

When I speak with clients, some hesitate at the cost and say to me, that’s just too much money for BAS reviews and quarterly lodgment.

It is strange, when you think if you have a plumber or electrician come to your home to fix a leaking pipe or a faulty switch, do you ever say, wow, that’s too much money.

You don’t, purely because you know that the Plumber or Electrician is a qualified tradesman and they have spent years in training and courses to be highly skilled in their area of expertise.

It’s no different as a Bookkeeper/BAS Agent, I have spent countless years of study, over 20 years of experience working in client’s onsite locations as well as working online from home, many hours, late nights studying, working on problematic areas of businesses, so why is it any different?

It isn’t.

What I provide to you is not only a service, but I provide 20 plus years’ experience as well. Of course, there will be a cost to that. If I was in my first-year learning Bookkeeping, of course I wouldn’t be charging much, because I would still be learning and inexperienced.

So, don’t look at the price, look at the experience a person can provide you for your business, making sure you’re not losing money but saving money and your bookkeeping and BAS is correct, so you don’t have the ATO chasing you.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me direct on 0429 363 047.

The ATO is warning businesses to stay up to date with their obligations

The ATO have been sending out notices to all businesses, warning them that if they are not staying up to date with their obligations, that is may in fact impact their eligibility for future stimulus measures.

In short, they are saying that businesses who are doing well need to resume their obligations whilst those that are facing ongoing hardship are encouraged to get in contact with the ATO.

Since September 1st 2020, the ATO has stopped providing blanket extensions to small business audit cases. The ATO have also recommended activity where the business is either not adversely impacted by COVID or is now in a position to progress.

If you need some help in this area, please do not hesitate to contact me direct on 0429 363 047.

Don’t be caught out underpaying staff

Are you aware that changes are happening from the 1st November 2020 to Award Wages, if you don’t you need to read below?

Did you know that the award minimum wages for Group 2 Modern Awards has actually increased by 1.75% from 1st November 2020? The increase in this wage will have a flow on effect to all businesses with loading, penalties, allowance and also overtime payments.

So as a business owner, you should take the steps to ensure wages are compliant with the November 2020 Modern Award increase.

I’ve noticed sometimes businesses never deliberately underpay, so normally it’s a lack of attention or oversight.

Remember to also review any of your ‘all-inclusive’ pay arrangements for employees covered by this Group 2 Modern Award. It’s important to know that employees who receive an all-inclusive salary, that the increase to the minimum rate may affect that of the all-inclusive salary, so make sure you check by going through the employee’s awards entitlements by reference to their actual hours of work.

Now if that sounds all too confusing, please give me a call on 0429 363 047 to have a look through.

The Budget 2020, what’s in it for SME’s?

Check out this link for further info, but the Budget 2020 was an interesting one.

https://www.mybusiness.com.au/finance/7527-budget-2020-what-s-included-for-smes?utm_source=MyBusiness&utm_campaign=06_10_2020&utm_medium=email&utm_content=1&utm_emailID=

There were a mixture of Tax Concessions, JobMaker hiring, whereby if a business hires a young job seeker aged 16-35 they will receive a JobMaker hiring credit of $200.00 per week for every new worker and $100.00 a week if they hire a new person aged 30 to 35 years. This is payable for the next 12 months, if that new person works at least 20 hours per week.

The other one I found particularly interesting was the $800m digital plan, to push businesses to adopt digital technologies post COVID.

Have a look at the link yourself and see what you think. Interesting times ahead for Australia.

Though if you are totally confused by it all, give me a call direct on 0429 363 047.

About Maree Punzet

Hi, I’m Maree Punzet, a mother to two boys who like many other mums out there with teenagers, one is finishing his High School Certificate this year and it’s been a tough one, doing assessments and exams during COVID-19.

I live in Cobar NSW, a mining town, a small community, where most people who live in Cobar for a while know the locals by their first name. Country towns are like that, everyone knows everyone, everyone knows your husband, kids, heck even the family dog’s name.

When I finished School I started out at the local shire, doing accounts payable, then I got a job at the local travel agency one of my jobs there was to keep the books this was back in the hand written bookkeeping days that was well and truly over 20 years ago, the 10 years ago I decided to start my own business.

I love numbers, finance, anything to do with Bookkeeping I just love it, it’s in my blood, my mum was an accountant. I am a Qualified Bookkeeper & BAS Agent and also been doing my certification to become a Tax Agent, though I do work closely with a Tax Agent. I am a sole trader, I have many people who look after my marketing, my social media, blogs, because I feel marketing is so important.

There are many many bookkeepers in Australia. Competition is fierce, so you need to stand out from the crowd.

I am happily married to my wonderful husband who I met whilst I was still at school and  it was love at first sight. Sickening I know, but when you know, you just know.

In my spare time I love dancing and I dance with our local dance group doing classes in Jazz, tap and Musical theatre.

So that’s just a small glimpse about me, Maree Punzet – Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping

PAYG Variations

This is a handy link about PAYG Variations.

‘The Australian Taxation Office has updated its guidance on pay-as-you-go instalments, reassuring businesses that they can vary their PAYG throughout the year if they think they will pay too much, compared with their estimated tax for the year’
